Using Windows Movie Maker for Zune

One question I've seen come up frequently is how to convert xyz video format for Zune. If you're technically inclined, a great way to convert a wide variety of video formats is Windows Media Encoder. But Windows Media Encoder isn't as approachable for the non-videophile as Windows Movie Maker, for example.

So if you want to convert, say AVI or Quicktime files for use on your Zune, you can do so using a custom profile and Vista's Windows Movie Maker. Here's how:

  1. Download the attachment associated with this post (zune Movie Maker profile.prx).
  2. Follow the instructions on the Windows Vista Help site to add the custom profile to Windows Movie Maker (the page linked also has info on creating custom profiles, if you want to create your own).
  3. These instructions show how to publish your movie using the new profile.
  4. Then just sync the published video to your Zune, and away you go!
