WinFS Beta 1 now available to MSDN subscribers!

WinFS Beta 1, the new relational file system for Windows, has been released on MSDN Subscriber Downloads. This release is designed to offer developers a preview of WinFS capabilities. WinFS will be in beta when Windows Vista ships and will RTM afterwards. WinFS, when, it ships will be available for download for Windows Vista and we are considering support for Windows XP.  The distribution mechanism for WinFS will be through an add-on download much like the .NET framework is today.

If you're interested in learning more about the future of the Windows file system, check it out today. It's listed under Tools, SDKs, and DDKs -> WinFS.

UPDATE: Tom Rizzo announces, and also notes that there's a new blog dedicated to WinFS.

UPDATE 2: Welcome NeoWin, Presence-PC, and XPSource readers! I hope you'll take a minute or two to check out the rest of my blog, and perhaps bookmark it...

had one very basic question about the implementation of WinFS.

As I understand it there is a close relationship between SQL Server and WinFS implementations.

All the metadata about files, I expect is stored in the relational DB.

The actual content of the files is that also stored in a DB or is it stored as a regular file in NTFS and just the metadata is in DB.

I was just curious about the implementation as we are looking at a similar implementation issue for us and wanted to leverage some ideas from WinFS.

I would recommend posting your question to Tom Rizzo’s blog…he’s in a much better position to get you the answer you’re looking for:
