Today at  the National Retail Federation (NRF) Annual Convention Microsoft announced the availability Windows Embedded POSReady 2009 the next generation of Windows Embedded for Point of Service (WEPOS).

For distributed or offline POS solutions add a little SQL in the form of SQL Server 2008 Express and take advantage of  the built-in Service Broker or Replication technologies or  you can leverage the small footprint of  SQL Server Compact 3.5 and synchronize data using Sync Framework and Sync Services.
