My engineering background encourages me automate processes. My architect experience encourages me to find patterns and model relationships. My operations experience forces to me to continuously look for ways to institutionalize efficiencies. My business management experience reminds me that it’s all about organizing people and initiatives to achieve strategy through building environments for people to excel. As a result, I spend a lot of my time engineering business management methodologies using my engineering, architecture and operations skills, and then carefully apply them to my organization to conduct strategic planning. I do this because each organization is different and there are so many variables involved in a resulting strategic planning process for every company – it makes little sense to reverse-engineer another company’s strategic planning process in the hopes of directly applying it to your company. As David K Hurst wrote in his HBR article Stop Trying to Engineer Success said it brilliantly.
