Leaving Las Vegas...

Hi...

now Mix is over... what is left??

First they sessions are all online under sessions.visitmix.com... and there is a Silverlight player with it.

Secondly I was thinking (one has plenty of time during an 11 hours flight) how Silverlight will change the game (or won't)??

When I started at Microsoft we had the notion of a SmartClient. It was the idea of mixing the best of a client side application and the of a web based application. So to have a locally installed software which is installed and updated from the network. You get the point...

Base was .net framework and we received feedback saying that 20 Megs are too much of a burden, the security model is strong but too complex and such alike.

I still think there are use cases for smart clients but now we add another way of smart client to it: Silverlight with .net (aka Version 1.1)

So there is a new stacking:

  1. Rich Client (Applications locally installed which really make use of machinery power and local storage like Office or rich games)
  2. Smart Client (Applications locally installed but somewhat lightweight and often updated but able to run offline)
  3. Silverlight 1.1 (Easy installation (runtime), low footprint, need network, rich user interface)
  4. Web Site (No installation, very low footprint, need network, somehow rich user interface)

Since choice is a good thing... I like it ;-)
