SMH : Ten to offer program downloads

Intriguing story on The SMH this evening
Ten to offer program downloads

Network Ten will begin making entire television programs available for download immediately after they air from early in the new year.

So many questions....

  • What format
  • What platform
  • Which programs
  • Will it be free or is it paid
  • What download technology
  • Will there be any DRM involved
  • Support for Windows Media Center

  1. To take a stab:

What format – Flash or Windows Media – the two most popular and obvious choices.

What platform – Considering they’re currently on top of ASP.NET, I’d say they’d stick with that.

Which programs – I reckon considering the success CBS has had with putting their mainstream shows up Ten would be remiss not to do the same.

Will it be free or is it paid – Gotta be free for now – ala CBS model.

What download technology – Again, Flash for online viewing or streaming Windows Media. I don’t reckon you’d get download to desktop capability.

Will there be any DRM involved – My bet that there won’t be a direct download model would eliminate the need for DRM. However, if they did, DRM will be all over it.

Support for Windows Media Center – Now that is the million dollar question. MCE is a goldmine ready to erupt (is that the correct euphemism).  Whoever figures out how to build proper commercial distribution over MCE and on sell it to the major network is gonna end up a very rich little camper. To my knowledge, no ones really figured it out satisfactorily just yet. So, short answer – no (or should I have started with the short answer :-))

  2. My 2 Cents.. says:

I bet they choose Real Audio or DIVX just to be different…

  3. I wouldn’t say that was 7 per se – that’s the kind of venture (ReelTime) that I’ve been waiting for for a while – show the traditional networks that they HAVE to be agile if they want to move forward.

Now, it looks like it’s going to happen.

    Win for consumers I say.
