"Top Level" technologies/products not supported on Windows Vista
We are investing a lot of time in ensuring applications that work on Windows XP will work on Windows Vista - and we have a great deal of info to help developers get their applications working on Windows Vista at www.devreadiness.org but after the info I shared on MSDE not being supported, I often get asked "Eric, what other products are not supported?". Well - the following is not meant to be definitive - but is a brain dump of where I think we are as of Release Candidate One.
- MSDE and SQL Server 2000 are not supported - but from personal experience I know MSDE does install and run https://www.microsoft.com/sql/prodinfo/previousversions/faq-sql_on_vista.mspx
- SQL Server 2005 will require SP2 which should ship soon after Windows Vista
- VS.NET 2005 (with or without SP1) will not function 100% on Windows Vista. There will be an update post SP1 just for Windows Vista https://blogs.msdn.com/somasegar/archive/2006/09/26/772250.aspx
- VS.NET 2003/2002 – not supported but will mostly work https://blogs.msdn.com/somasegar/archive/2006/09/26/772250.aspx
- Winhlp32.exe is no longer included - so .hlp files won't open unless a user sources it from the Microsoft Download Center. https://support.microsoft.com/kb/917607
- The DHTML Editing Control will not be included in Windows Vista https://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnlong/html/htmleditinfuture.asp
- Virtual PC 2004 is not supported on Windows Vista. Virtual PC 2007 is in Beta https://connect.microsoft.com/programdetails.aspx?ProgramDetailsID=874
No doubt there are more at this level - but that seems plenty to be getting on with!
