Canis Novus

After fighting a spirited but doomed-to-fail delaying action for several years, the two caniphiles in the family finally overcame my defenses on Saturday, and there’s a new addition to the household.

He’s part Australian Cattle dog, and part unspecified (some think Staffordshire terrier), and he looks remarkably like the picture below.

And today, he’s at the vet to get “tutored” (there’s an old Gary Larson “Far Side” cartoon where one dog is saying to the other, “Guess What! I get to go to the vet today to be tutored!”)

And there was me thinking from the title you’d managed to breed an Unspeakable New Breed Of Devil-Dog Using Arts That Man Was Not Meant To Know.

    Oh well, can’t have everything.

PS. Safety tip: the Australian cattle dog part will *not* be the cuddly bit. I think the official taxonomic description is "insane razor-wire furred bastards who don’t let go".

  2. Ah, awesome dogs! Yes, "Australian Cattle Dog" == "Heelers" (coming in shades of blue or red typically) here in Texas. Great, great dogs.

I have a mix at home that’s part heeler, collie and something else. But, she’s very loyal, very loving and super smart. That’s the heeler in her. And, she loves to heel and work our labrador while she chases tennis balls. 😉

It’s funny – she’s never seen a cow, but she instinctively knows how to work. Neat.

    Congrats, though. Dogs are awesome.
