Issue selecting items from Combo Boxes when the Dynamics AX Client is running as RemoteApp

Windows Server 2008 introduces a nice feature for the Terminal Services that is called RemoteApp. RemoteApp programs are accessed remotely through Terminal Services and appear as if they are running on the local computer. The RemoteApp is integrated on the client PC’s desktop, running in its own resizable window and showing up in the taskbar. The big difference is that there is no Window of the Terminal Server’s user desktop showing up any more. For more information on RemoteApp see: TS RemoteApp Step-by-Step Guide

The Dynamics AX Client is often executed on Windows Terminal Services especially if the available network bandwidth in the target location does not satisfy the minimum requirement needed.

When the Dynamics AX 4.0 Client or the Dynamics AX 2009 Client is running as RemoteApp on Windows Server 2008 Terminal Services, it might happen that you get an issue with Combo Boxes (Drop-Down elements). When you click at an item from a Combo Box with the mouse, the item you clicked at is not selected. You can however use the [Cursor Up] / [Cursor Down] keys on the Keyboard to select a different value.

This issue happens not with all Combo Boxes in the Dynamics AX Client, but it is often reported for the Print form when you want to change the target printer. The issue is also not limited to the Dynamics AX Client, but can also show up with other applications as well.

The Windows Hotfix KB968358 is solving this issue for the Remote Desktop Client 6.1. If you are using the Remote Desktop Client 7.0 on Windows 7 or Windows Vista please install the Windows Hotfix KB979425 instead (Note: There does not exist a fix for the Remote Desktop Client 7.0 running on Windows XP).

As the Hotfix is addressing the Remote Desktop Client it has to be installed on each Client PC that is accessing the Terminal Services hosting the Dynamics AX Client RemoteApp.

Sorry, but obviously this hotfix does not help with Windows 2008 R2 RDS. I am experiencing that exact issue with AX 3.0 but installing the hotfix did not help. Neither did update to RDP Client 7.0. Also in Windows 7 the problem occurs. Are there any updates available for R2?

    Thanks.

The fix for Windows 7/Windows 2008 R2 RDC 7.0 got publicly released overnight today (08 Feb 2010), see http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;979425 for details and links to download the fix.

    Hi,

I’m afraid I can’t get this hotfix to work on XP (5.1 2600.xpsp_sp3_gdr.091208-2036), mstsc.exe version 6.1.7600.16385 (which is more recent than the hotfix).

    Running AX 4.0 SP2 as a RemoteApp on WS 2008 R2 Std. (6.1 7600).

Any ideas or advice – or a new hotfix in the works for the latest RDC client on XP?

    Cheers,

    Thorarinn

PS  I believe this issue only affects drop-down boxes of “enumerated” field types in AX, look-up boxes (to other tables) work correctly.

  4. EMEAAXTec says:

    Hi Thorarinn,

You are right that not all Combo Boxes in Dynamics AX are affected, especially lookups usually work fine.

In regards to Windows XP SP3: Please check the file “Lhmstscx.dll”, this DLL should have a version >= 6.0.6001.22435 for the fix to be included.

When downloading the Hotfix please make sure you have chosen the correct language of the Hotfix, as for Windows XP Hotfixes the language of the Hotfix has to match!

    Hi Alex.

I believe you’re misreading the version numbers Thorarinn is specifying. He’s running 6.1.7600.16385 and not the 6.0 version.

This is still an issue with the 6.1.7600.16385 for XP. That’s the version they call RDC 7.

In http://support.microsoft.com/kb/969084 they actually mention that this client update will undo the update from KB968358. But provide no information on when a fix will be available.

Do you have any information if this fix is coming for XP SP3 with RDC 7 ?

    Regards,

    Nóri

  6. EMEAAXTec says:

    Hi Nóri,

Yes, you are right I was mixing up the version numbers. Thanks for pointing that out!

For RDC7 on other O/S than Windows 7 there is currently no fix available. However a fix is in progress.

I will make an update to this post once new fixes get available.

    Best regards,

    Hi Nóri,

A RDC7 fix for Windows Vista will be available very soon (next month).

Unfortunately there will be no RDC7 fix for Windows XP created, because the Mainstream support phase for Windows XP has ended (support.microsoft.com/lifecycle).
