On The Other Side Of The World…

While Seattle is getting chilly and really feels like winter, I miss the warm weather and fun I had in China last month.

TechEd China 2007 was held in Beijing on Nov. 7-9.  CEO Steve Ballmer was the Keynote speaker. For the first time, the keynote was presented in the Great Hall of the People, “the most magnificent ‘conf room’ in the world as Steve said.

I presented an introductory session on XPe, explained the platform concepts, demo'd the tools, components and EEFs and walked the audience through the end-to-end image building and deployment process. It was no surprise that we did not attract a big crowd for this session. Still only a few companies and developers are familiar with XPe. I am collaborating with local colleagues to generate more buzz such as webcasts, community events, hands-on-labs etc. There are many exciting things expected to happen there!

I also enjoyed two other interactive sessions: one was with a few speakers from Redmond and the local Microsoft office where we shared our experiences of career/growth in Microsoft; the other was with key authors of a book written in Chinese about Microsoft culture 360 degree who were present to sign the book and meet the readers. You can find session photos at the top left corner of the speaker photos here:

I also spent a few days in Shanghai. While I was so amazed by the popular (or, obsessive?) usage of text messaging on cell phones there, I also found another interesting device that I saw many young people carrying in subways. I believe it’s the Ultra Mobile PC (UMPC).

I did some search and found there is actually a website in Chinese on UMPC: https://www.umpc.org.cn/. That site has a link to Microsoft’s Origami Project on UMPC, https://origamiproject.com/default.aspx... I hear “The World is Flat” echoing in my eyes…

For sure, the fascinating and ever-growing food culture and “Olympic Games 2008 everywhere” phenomenon struck me again just like what I felt during my MEDC China trip in June…
