Book Review: The Search by John Battelle

Now that my book is in a phase of grammar reviews, I have time to read. And after the labor of my book there is quite a stack of books in my library that have not gotten the attention they deserved. Yes there are technical books there and even a lot of new SharePoint ones. But I thought I would start with some lighter reading first. And of course, I post my thoughts here as I go along since I am always asked to recommend a good book.

The first one I tore into was absolutely phenomenal. It is entitled: The Search: How Google and its Rivals Rewrote the Rules of Business and our Culture by John Battelle. This book is a must read for anyone who claims to be in the portals or search space. The book basically is a history of Search and how it grew from the realm of academia into the business behemoth that it is today. Though Google is in the book's title, face time is also given to Yahoo, Microsoft, Ask.com, AltaVista, etc. It provides an insight into the industry that not too many have.

My only compaint is that this is a book that seems to tell a story that has yet to run its course. Even with an Epilogue that trys to update from its original print, there has been so much more to this story lately that I would have loved to read about. Can you say sequel? I'd buy it again. And I'm letting friends borrow mine who don't get to the book store often enough.

Here is a link on Amazon. It will be the best 10 bucks you spent on a tech book (save mine of course):
