What’s new in CU8 for WMS and TMS?

The SCM Team are glad to announce the launch of Cumulative Update 8 for Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3. The whole team is thrilled in the interest you have shown for R3 and we are glad to contribute in making Dynamics AX an even better and more versatile solution in the supply chain management areas. This release includes several substantial improvements in warehouse management and transportation management. Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3 CU8 (KB2998197) is available for download using R3 Update Installer on Life Cycle Services. The following information and related articles about what’s new in CU8 is available on TechNet.

Within WMS and TMS the following enhancements are made available:

  • Use a load building workbench to automatically build loads based on the templates and strategy that you define.
  • Use cross-docking to move packages of products through a warehouse while using limited or no storage.
  • Set up a company policy for sales order fulfillment and create batch jobs to release sales orders and transfer orders to the warehouse.
  • Allocate batch numbers.
  • Receive items at a different warehouse than expected.
  • Use product variants in warehouse management processes.

The following table shows an excerpt from TechNet on a more detailed list of the enhancements for CU8 in WMS and TMS.

Load building workbench

This load building feature lets you automatically build loads using a load building workbench. You set up filters that define a subset of supply or demand lines, load building templates, and a strategy for load building. At the touch of a button, suggested loads are generated, which can later be turned into actual loads. This feature is designed for extensibility so that advanced load building strategies can easily be plugged in.

For more information, see Automate the process of building loads.

Cross-docking to move packages of products through a warehouse while using limited or no storage

Cross-docking is useful if you purchase products from different vendors, the vendors prepack cartoons that contain a mix of products or product variants, and you want to distribute cartons to one or more retail stores. This feature works with or without the Warehouse management module.

For more information, see Cross docking packages in Warehouse management.

Set up a company policy for sales order fulfillment and create batch jobs to release sales orders and transfer orders to the warehouse.

You need to set up a default company policy for sales order fulfillment rates. The policy controls the percentage of the total price or the quantity of an order that must be reserved physical before a sales order can be released to the warehouse. You can also set up a policy for specific customers. Customer-specific policies override the default policy.

For more information, see Sales orders and fulfillment rates in Warehouse management.

Allocate batch numbers in Warehouse management

You can define policies that control when batch numbers are allocated by setting up one or more number groups, and then assigning them to products. It’s possible to allocate batch numbers when you perform a physical receipt of a product, or when you create a line that includes a product on a source document, such as a purchase order. You can also manually allocate batch numbers to products.

For more information, see Batch numbers in Warehouse management.

Receive items at a different warehouse than expected

You can set up a mobile device to receive loads or items at a warehouse that differs from the warehouse that was specified on the source document. When you receive the load or item, the load or item is located at the new warehouse and all related work is created for the new warehouse

For more information, see Receive items at a different warehouse than expected.

Use product variants in warehouse management processes

Product variants are defined by product masters with product dimension variations, for example, a single towel in different sizes and colors. Instead of creating multiple products, you create a single product master and use the various combinations of sizes and colors as different product variants. You can use product variants in the following processes:

• When you define stocking limits.

• When you configure work confirmation and bar code scanning on mobile devices.

• When you create replenishment templates.

• When you set up rules for converting units of measure.

• When you assign fixed warehouse locations.

For more information, see Define pack size categories and location stocking limits, Configure mobile devices for warehouse work, Set up replenishment, Set up a unit sequence group and unit of measure conversions in Warehouse management, and Set up parameters to create a warehouse location.

Use additional production processes in a warehouse

It’s now possible to use these additional production processes in a warehouse:

• Direct raw materials to the operation that will consume them on a route.

• Set up a work template to create work to put away finished goods and co-products and by-products from the last operation on a particular production route.

• Direct work to pick up finished goods to the last operation on a production route.

For more information, see Set up production processes in a warehouse.

Use bar code lookup in inbound processes

Bar code lookup functionality can be used with products and product variants to support several inbound operations that are carried out by warehouse workers on mobile devices.

For more information, see Use bar codes in warehouse operations.

  2. Hi Nitin,

Please have a look at the Warehouse Management System Implementation Guide. Section 5 covers Manufacturing and Warehouse management. blogs.msdn.com/…/warehouse-management-system-implementation-guide.aspx

    Hi Markus,

    Thanks for this great info.

You are mentioning that the cross dock of packages works for both for with or without the Warehouse management module. In the documentation you are refering to however is stated: All of the products and product variants that the packages include must be enabled for warehouse management processes. What do you mean by your remark that is should also work without the Warehouse management module enabled?

  4. Hi Jan,

When you use the planned cross docking per package form to manually create the transfer orders for all the items per packages, the product packages does not need to be associated with a storage dimension with the "Use warehouse management processes" selected. This might be a faster way to create transfer orders instead of manually selecting each of the items in the planned cross docking item form related to product packages. Please note that without the using warehouse management processes you cannot use the automatic link between the product packages and the license plate IDs and the outbound processes of picking "product packages".

    Hi Markus.

Great info about CU8 and WMS.

Regarding Unit of measure on product variant I'm a bit confused. It's possible to define unit of measure on product variants, and this is great, but it's not possible to change the unit of measure on a Sales order or purchase order the following error occur "Product variant unit conversions are not supported for this process. Please check the setup for product master %1."

Will it be supported in the future updates?

  6. Hi Mikael,

The unit of measure conversion introduced with product variants is only enabled for the following advanced warehousing processes:

    – Purchase order Item receiving

    – Purchase order Load receiving

    – Transfer order Line number receiving

    – Transfer order Item receiving

    – Purchase order line number receiving

    – Sales order picking

    – Transfer order picking

    – Cycle counting

    – Movement by template

    – Manual movement

If you try it in other workflow you will get the error message you received. If this process is required for you then it will be necessary to remove the variant-specific unit of measure conversions and simply use the legacy functionality of product-based unit of measure conversion. We know of this limitation but I cannot tell you when or if this will be available in the future.
