Upgrading to Management Reporter 2012 RU3 for Dynamics GP 2010 Customers

Are you one of one of those individuals that upgrades before reading the documentation? I know I have been guilty of it. Now that I have wiped the look of shame off my face let me take the time to explain the upgrade process for Dynamics GP 2010 customers, including how to take advantage of the new data mart.

First, when you upgrade to Management Reporter 2012 RU3, don’t forget to go to File > Configure and add the data mart option. As mentioned in a previous blog, this is the recommended method of reporting for Dynamics GP 2010 customers going forward. Refer to the blog to see the few special circumstances when you may need to use the legacy provider for specific reports.

Here is how the upgrade process should look for Dynamics GP customers.

  1. Run the executable for Management Reporter 2012 RU3 at the server.
  2. Open the Configuration Console and in the lower left hand corner, select to upgrade the Management Reporter 2012 database. When this completed, verify that both Management Reporter 2012 services are running (application and process services). It is not necessary to import companies again as part of the upgrade process.
  3. When the upgrade of the Management Reporter database completes you should then configure the data mart. Configure the data mart following the Data Provider Guide for Dynamics GP.
  4. When the data mart configuration is complete, upgrade each of the client workstations.

The data mart is the preferred method of reporting for Dynamics GP customers, but there will be a few changes that come along with it.

  • Companies associated with the legacy provider will have a suffix of –Curr. An example is GPDAT-Curr. Because of this, you will need to update the following:
    • Use the auto text of Company Description (@CompDesc) for headers, or type the headers in manually for those specific reports.
    • If you have reporting unit restrictions you will also need to reselect those.
    • Update the reporting tree definitions with the new company name for those few reports.
    • Select the appropriate company in the report definition.
  • Analytical Accounting dimensions are named after the Transaction Dimension ID, not the Description. This will require you to reselect the values where the Id does not equal the description. Customer Support is working on a diagnostic tool to assist with this change. Please contact them for further details.
  • Because you can use one company now for Dynamics GP General Ledger and Dynamics GP Analytical Accounting reporting, budgets from Analytical Accounting will have a prefix of AA. This will require you to reselect the book codes in the column definition and/or row definition. This is a onetime change only.
  • Some attributes will be named differently in the data mart than with the legacy provider. You may need to reselect those on the column and/or attribute definitions. This also would be a onetime change.

Once you have done this you are ready to start generating your reports against the data mart and begin the enhanced reporting experience.
