It’s a big and amazing world out there.

When you are stuck at home inside because the weather outside is so miserably cold the mind inevitably wanders to far flung and warmer places. I’ve been introduced, by my brother Murray, to a useful independent travel guide site that he has started contributing to. It’s called SimonSeeks.com. The idea is that individual travellers author guides to places they’ve been to and readers can rate them and add comments. The guides also get actively reviewed by editorial staff to maintain overall quality.

You can read Murray’s excellent first contributions here:

Pilgrim's progress: the road to Santiago de Compostela

La Coruna, Spain: Rio in disguise?

On the topic of travel, another site I like is a single author site by Galen R. Frysinger. Man has that guy travelled!?

I’ve travelled quite a bit in my time and would love to get around to writing up about some of my travels.

I was trying to think the other day of some of the most memorable things I’ve seen or experienced. Here are five that came to mind (in “no particular order” as they love to say on TV reality talent competitions):

Staring into the incredible night sky from Eagle’s Nest in Namibia.
Seeing the Hong Kong skyline at night from a junk.
Travelling three and a half days by bus in each direction to spend one day at the Kashgar Sunday market.
Taking the Trans-Siberian Railway from Beijing to Berlin before the dissolution of the USSR.
Standing staring gobsmacked at the sheer power of Dettifoss, the most powerful waterfall in Europe.

I’d love to hear about your top sights or experiences from around the world.

Happy travelling!

Cheers

Doug
