FTP server resets, WSAECONNABORTED (10053) and other nasty stuff on Windows Server 2003

If you are seeing issues where your Windows Server 2003 based FTP server is unexpectedly resetting connection it may be a manifestation of this problem:

Error code when you run a network program that uses a Winsock connection on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003: "WSAECONNABORTED (10053)"

 

The problem is still there in Windows Server 2003 service pack 2 so if you think you may be hitting that problem either click through on the "View and request hotfix downloads" link on that article or better still install the (at time of writing) most recent security update for AFD.SYS that also includes the same fix:

or to Microsoft Update to update your server with all that latest security updates.
