Missing in WinRT XAML: RichTextBox

Hey what happened to the RichTextBox in WinRT/Metro XAML?  There is a RichTextBlock, but not RichTextBox, what the heck?  Is this bad?  Not to me, FlowDocuments seemed like a way to keep a paycheck coming since it just added to complexity in XAML.  Not a bad thing, but just saying.  If RichTextBox comes back, I can use it, but if not, I am not missing it.  Except for this one app I am working on right now.

Not to be grumpy, but maybe it’s that time of year to switch to being the grumpy guy at Microsoft.   So far this month has shaped up to be pretty bad, ignoring the tax situation, but there were other things that have happened.

All right, the truth is that I liked the RichTextBox, didn’t use it much, but when I did it saved time.  Now it is gone.  Bummer.  But only if you are designing exclusively for WinRT/Metro XAML.  Of course you can still do the Windows Presentation Foundation using XAML, so that is a good thing.

That does mean that you might be surprised if you are planning on using the RichTextBox in Visual Studio 11 Express Beta.

So if you read the MSDN article at:

https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.windows.controls.richtextbox(v=vs.110).aspx

the sample code won’t work, which you likely figured out and then used Bing (you did use Bing right) to figure out what the problem is with the sample, nothing wrong with the sample, Windows 8, WinRT, Metro, or you.
