Windows Mobile 6 upgrades

HTC has announed it will make software upgrades available for free online at https://downloads.europe.htc.com for the following models: Advantage, TyTN, S620, P4350 and P3300. There will be no costo to upgrade. The downloads should become avaulable soon ("beginning at the end of April" they say).

Before you get too excited, it is important to note that this upgrade is only for unlocked (mostly European) devices. Tjree reasons for this:

1.- Operators in the US have not tested these builds so they won't support them in the US. It could be that some features don't work well in the US as it is common for sofwtare to go through operator-specific customizations, fixes and optimizations during the testing process

2.- The key mappings may not match - although the phones may look the same it is common for them to have small differencs in implementation. As an example, the US T-Mobile Dash has a T-Zones key which is a browser key in the S620.

3.- Most importantly, your phone may be bootloader-locked, which means that it will only accept software upgrades that match the bootloader already installed. So you may not be able to install a "generic" HTC software in a Cingular or Sprint branded phone.

Still, if you have an unlocked HTC and it is one of the models in the list, you may want to bookmark https://downloads.europe.htc.com/
