Go see the movie: Red Dog

David Meego - Click for blog homepageRed DogI don't normally post about movies, but I saw the Australian movie "Red Dog" on the weekend and must say that it was one of the best movies I have seen in a long time. A movie relying on great characters who are real people rather than special effects and super heros.

I am not sure if it will be released outside of Australia, but if you get the chance ... go see it. You will need a box of tissues as you laugh and cry your way through this dramatisation of the Red Dog novel by Louis de Bernières.

Red Dog is based on the true story of the legendary Red Cloud Kelpie that was adopted by the community of Dampier in the Pilbara region in the north west of Western Australia. There is even a statue dedicated to Red Dog on the outskirts of the town (see the Wiki page below).

The star of the show is a dog named Koko. The director spent a lot of time trying to find the perfect dog for the role. In fact, Koko was cast in the role of Red Dog before any humans in the movie were cast (see news article).

Check out the movie trailer and Koko's screen test video below.

If you see the movie, please post your feedback as comments on this post.

PS: The movie is probably a more realistic portrayal of life in Australia's outback than shown in the movies Crocodile Dundee or Australia.
