OneNote Mobile for iPhone – RE: "Login failed, error: 400" Error

First of all thank you very much for your interest in OneNote Mobile for the iPhone, there has been a tremendous response thus far.

We have received reports from customers who are hitting an error on initial login, with the following message: "Login failed, error: 400".

pic_fix

The team has been investigating the issue and believe we have identified the cause. We are working on an update. However the underlying cause is an intermittent issue, due to overwhelming interest in the app. The workaround is to keep trying to sign in, once you get past this error then OneNote will sync without any problem.

Thank you for your patience and interest in OneNote, we all apologize for the inconvenience.

I sure hope so. I've been trying to get this to work for an hour. No luck. I hope Apple approves the update ASAP.

  2. xxdesmus says:

PLEASE don't require iOS 4.2 …does 4.1 really not work? There are TONS of us who would to use this app, but we're not on version 4.2 yet.

  3. Andrew Dugdell says:

Hi Daniel, is there a way we can have OneNote update released to the UK/AUS App store as well.  There are tons of Brits and Aussies, who would love to get the app, and provide valuable feedback to the teams.

  4. A Evans says:

Thanks for the information.  I did finally get it to work.  Nice app!

  5. Eric says:

Is this a US-only release? I cannot find it in the AppStore.

  6. Jimmy says:

Ya, I can't upgrade to 4.2 yet… is there really valid reason to restrict it to 4.2 ?

  7. wuwu says:

any way to "check off" only specific notebooks to sync with iPhone? no use wasting device space with notebooks that can't display properly (i.e., with tables, ink, etc) on the mobile device

  8. Nic Betts says:

Logging in ok, but getting Loading list of notebooks failed (400) :(

  9. Maurice S. Villarreal says:

I downloaded this App to my iPad and after it finished the installation i tried to run it. But it won't start. It starts to load and then return to the springboard. Is this App iPad compatible?

  10. David says:

I think the avalanche of interest in this app is proof that you need to push out more Office Apps for the iPhone and Android for that matter.

  11. robinteractive says:

Receiving the same error here, have confidence you'll get it fixed and looking forward to giving an operational app a shot. The bigger question if it requires an app update… how long before Apple approves that? 😉

  12. descapa says:

@all – The only work around is to just keep retrying.  Sorry for the trouble.

@xxdesmus & Jimmy – We need to require this because Apple said we did for newly submitted apps to the app store.  Sorry for the trouble.

@Andrew & Eric – We are looking at other markets for future releases but nothing else other than US App Store right now.

@Maurice – It does work on the iPad, is your iPad jailbroken?  We have only heard of reports of crashes on jailbroken devices.  My non-jb iPad works without any issue.  Any details?

  13. Ding Ho says:

Why won't this work with OneNote 2007?

  14. Anna Koo says:

It still doesn't work. I've tried abt hundred times. pls help me.

  15. Danny says:

Hi – I was able to log in successfully, but then I get the following error when trying to "sync now" via settings: "Loading list of notebooks failed. (405)"  I have an iPhone with the latest software and I am using OneNote 2010.  Thanks for your help.

  16. BruceWonder says:

Been trying to log on…created a new account and still cant log on

  17. Schalk Marais says:

Grrr… I hope that update is out SOON !!

  18. Graham says:

    @ descapa

Why no other markets? Even Canada falls under the standard office license. I can see small developers doing this, but te product you tie into works here so why notake te app available? It's only a region checkbox, nothing huge an logistical..

    Back to evernote I go…

  19. Homer Berkowitz says:

There's nothing more frustrating than downloading an app and then having it not work right off the bat.  I've been trying over and over to get this to work and I keep getting error 400 and 500.  If I'm getting error 500, I wonder what the other 499 errors are for.

If I can't get it to work shortly, I'm going to delete the app and forget I ever had it.

  20. This app is useless. says:

Had to try to login about 25 times, then it fails to sync notebooks.  How can you not make sure the product works before launching.  Typical Microsoft.

  21. HailToTheChimp says:

Epic Fail, Microsoft. Did it occur to anyone to test this product before releasing it?

  22. Jeff says:

I clicked "Sign In" three times in rapid succession and it let me in on the third.

    Good luck!

  23. DS says:

Keep trying?  You guys are smarter than that.  Or maybe not.  Life is too short.  Fix it.  It NEVER should have been released.  You all should be MORTIFIED at this abysmal failure

  24. Vanessa says:

After 2 years of waiting I'm so excited that OneNote has been released on the iPhone… but I've since moved on to Android. Any updates on an Android version of OneNote?

(I'm sure you've all seen the numbers on Android vs iPhone users: mashable.com/…/iphone-android-nielsen)

  25. Thom_D says:

I finally managed to sneak into the login line for OneNote.  Although I didn't realize it when it happened.  I had been tapping the sign in button on the app and waiting for the error message to pop up, tap the cancel button, tap the sign in button, etc. etc. for over an hour.  I would periodically look at my phone, see that it had errored out and try again.

I guess that I finally did get through to the log in server but I didn't get any type of notification one way or the other.  The screen just sat there looking like it was waiting for a response from MS that I had signed in or errored out again so I just ignored it.  I had to go somewhere so I closed the app and went about my business.

An hour later I tried it again and was surprised to see that I had apparently been let into the system because the app was working.  So far it seems to be working fine.  I guess that MS simply way underestimated the number of people that would want a free app and didn't have the resources it needed to get people logged in on release day.  Not a great first impression, but it seems to be working just fine now.

  26. Andrew says:

It works on iPad, once on iPhone awesome!!!!

Please please pweez make iPad app.. I will pay formore functionality for a iPad version.

This is big!!  Especially for college notes. I will call it my onenote pad!!!

  27. Rkh says:

Why can't I see my onenote 2007 notebooks? Does this only work with onenote 2010?!?

  28. DimkaNewtown says:

Some comments on the OneNote app (besides the obvious -400 and -500 errors):

    1. I have a notebook over 80megs in size on the skydrive, the syncing started over 3G and while there was a button to interrupt the sync i did not know if i should've. This ate up battery life in huge chunks. Basically it would be nice if some kind of time/size estimate was provided PRIOR to initiating sync.

    2. Even after the sync was done, it takes an extremely long time to sync a single page (just text) over 3G. Not sure if it's my connection, the algorithm to validate what needs to be synced or the MSFT servers.

sorry for double post, please remove one (and this one)

  31. Gaurav says:

Tried almost 15-20 time and finally I was able to login now syncing all my documents

  32. Steve B. says:

Really, Microsoft?  Even getting past the "intermittent" login error, app still won't sync without error.   Get your act together.

  33. staru says:

This is not working. I'm trying past 1 hour to get in .. Always says Logon failed error: 400. Just another reason people running away from MS.

  34. Tom says:

Please remove the online requirement from the app. A mobile productivity app that req online to run isn't very productive. We don't always have wifi or cellular signal everywhere we use the iPhone. Also, I don't fully believe the claim that apple req limiting to 4.2 seeing as I never had to update for any of the other new apps I bought until your app. Yours was the only one, including a couple other brand new apps from the very same day.

  36. Dubmun says:

Thanks for the post. It was very helpful. After multiple tries I was able to sync. I'm very thankful for this app… been wishing it existed for at least a year now! Great job!

  37. Pink says:

I'm using it on an iPod and it shows sync error (-1) how can I sync ?

  38. ThaNatrix says:

If you're on 4.1 and want the app, and you're jailbroken you can add the following source in Cydia:  ihackstore.com/repo

From there you can download Firmware 4.2.1 fake, which will allow you to download most apps requiring 4.2.1 (I haven't found any that don't work…I downloaded OneNote just now :)

  39. anthony says:

I was getting the error on my phone but as soon as i tried turning off wifi and signing in over 3g it worked with no problems.  If you are still having a problem I would try to turn off wifi and do it over the data network. If your using an ipod touch I cant really help you sorry.

  40. Ktulu says:

I was unable to log in, getting this error repeatedly.  After a reboot of the iPhone it logged in without error.  Just a suggestion to those having troubles; it may work for you, as well.

  41. Crop Circles says:

Pathetic excuse, how can you say it's so popular that's the reason and also a update to fix the problem is coming. error 400 has a specific meaning and server busy is not it. Are these the same programmers that coded Vista?

  42. Frustrated says:

Like many others I'm getting the 400 error on logon and found this site via Google.

Guess I'll stick with Evernote for now, which I've been using more recently because its syncing feature just works (and on many platforms).  Its a shame because I have such a large existing OneNote notebook.  If MS doesn't get on top of this soon I'll probably bite the bullet and migrate all the notes into Evernote (although it will be a pain).

  43. Dave says:

Hi gang!  I was able to log in.  However, I can't sync.  Getting an error "Loading list of Notebooks failed. (500)"  Any work around for this yet?  Thanks!

  44. Andy says:

If I could interject something;  I love MS products and I'm definitely a 'Softie… but please – it's the 21st century.  Get rid of numbered error messages!  They are completely out-of-date, and totally destroy the user experience.  Say something meaningful…!

  45. ITMurphy says:

Turn off 3G and turn on WIFI log in ok

  46. Bill W says:

I would love to see OneNote for the Android Platform.  I love OneNote and it's only gotten better with each iteration.

But I don't have an iPhone and don't see myself getting one for at least another two years (hmm – why would that be… <G>).

  47. mws1969 says:

After about a day of trying (error 400), it finally worked!!!

  48. Omid says:

I tried is few times and received the same error.  The following morning i tried again, and on the 3rd attempt it worked.  Thank you.

  49. Dan Dalke says:

I have found that I can't log in when using WiFi but can if I turn off WiFi and use 3G.

  50. JM says:

I used Thom_D earlier suggestion of trying to rapidly log in, and after a few tries it worked! Prior to this I had powered off my Touch, based on another suggestion. Dunno if the power off was necessary, but I'm finally in.

But my dilemma: I use a Touch, not an iPhone. I don't always have internet connectivity. It occurred to me that I might not be able to get to my OneNote files if I'm not online. If that's the case, it's truly a bummer and the app is useless to me.

  51. GW says:

Now that I can login, finally, I get the notebook syncing error, "Loading list of notebooks failed. (501)"  Manually trying to sync, I get error codes 400, 401, 500 and 501 randomly.

The whole notion of "after you login it will work" is simply not true.

  52. Jason says:

Well, thanks to the update I no longer get the 400 error. Now I get one that says "login failed, error 2147186438"

  53. Mike Ernest says:

When click install on my iPhone, a popup box appears asking me to log on to itunes when I type in my password it

Loops back to install screen to click install again then the popup appears again and it never installs it just keep going around in a loop? What's the problem?

  54. Bill L. says:

Error 405 for days now. Really?  Come on MS, fix this please.

  55. Mario says:

Version 1.3 still have error 400. Any news? Thanks

  56. K j b says:

I also still have this error in the iPad version. Any help?

  57. descapa says:

If people are still having the 400 error please email me and on the contact link and then we can work over email to try and figure out what is going on.

  58. Brian Cohen says:

I can access the application on my PC. I can access my skydrive. I have attempted many of the solutions put forth on various forums.

I cannot access it from either of my apple devices for weeks.

  59. descapa says:

Brian – Sorry to hear this, if you are still having problems would you please email us at the link on the top of this page?  Then we can help look into this further.

  60. Melissa says:

The app worked great on my iPhone for a few days – just long enough to get me to migrate all my notebooks over from Evernote.  Now I'm getting the 405 "can't sync" error.

It's a real shame, as I prefer the OneNote organizing system to Evernote, but if I can't use it from my phone, it's pretty much useless to me.

  61. Chris says:

After upgrading Skydrive to 50GB Webspace i receive the Error 400 if i want to login with Onenote App on iOS Devices.

Before that (and with some Freeacounts) everthing worked and works.

  62. SandyG says:

really?  I have been reading these posts thinking these are current, but much to my surprise, they are 2 years old, and you still have not fixed the problem!!!!  I get the "We were unable to sign you in

There is a problem with your Microsoft account. To fix this, sign in to account.live.com from a browser."  BUT there is nothing wrong with my account, just your app!  unbelievable!

  63. jwr says:

I get error 80630152, can not complete this task it says. I pay for office 365. Arge….:(
