Web Services were enhanced with the release of .NET Framework 2.0 and then came along WSE 3.0 in December 2005 and in January 2006 Microsoft announced GO-LIVE licensing for Windows Communication Foundation (formerly known as Indigo).  If you are confused about all this then I would highly recommend that you read Aaron Skonnard article in which he answers the most common questions on ASMX, WSE 3.0 and WCF.
