Xbox 2 and XNA Studio at GDC

Xbox 2 will have a multicore processor and be able to perform one trillion calculations per second. Not only that, you can use XNA Studio, built on Visual Studio Team System to develop games. Sweetness.

    XNA Studio is one of the first major products to come out of the XNA Initiative Microsoft announced a year ago to standardize game development across different systems. Developers could use the same XNA tools to create games for Windows PCs, the current Xbox and future versions of the console, Microsoft promised.

    XNA Studio is based on Visual Studio Team System, Microsoft's collection of code-writing tools for Windows developers who work in large teams.

    XNA Studio will include similar collaboration features meant to facilitate the exchange of code between programmers, designers, quality assurance testers and other members of a development project, Microsoft said in a statement. The software will also introduce a new unified file format to ease sharing of game assets.

    1. Don’t get me wrong, I like my XBox, but the thing that everyone at MS (and the XBox MVP lead agrees with me on this, as well as a number of other points) seems to forget is that without good games (and being the first to market with those games), the system is worthless.

      Get GTA, FF, Gran Turismo, MGS, Resident Evil or any other "killer" game out to market FIRST, and it won’t matter what the specs of the machine are.

      Game producers arent flocking to PS2 because it is the best system on the market. Making games like "bloodwake" just isn’t going to cut it.

    3. Hmm, sorry the post came off the wrong way I did not mean say that the hardware was going to be the reason for Xbox 2’s success. I just pointed out the new multicore processor and the fact that you can develop games using XNA/Visual Studio Team System.

      I totally agree with you good games are critical. Look at the success of Halo 2 or PC games like the Age of Empires series or Flight Simulator.

      Certainly re-hashing the same titles with more pixels adds no real value and customers can just play the old versions of those games rather then shelling out a couple hundred bucks for the same game on a new console..

      Brian Benincasa from the DirectX team had a great rant about this in his post on the Dice conference.

      To your point on why developers go to PS2, *I* think (read my disclaimer) it’s all about market share. While it isn’t a problem for a large game developer company like Electronic Arts to port to multiple consoles, smaller companies want to reach as many eyes as possible with a limited budget. As such, they’ll create a game that only targets one console. The big players will always be console agnostic because they are game developers and don’t care about the platform.

      With the advent of XNA, creating a game once for Xbox enables the game to play on a Windows PC as well. That’s a distinct advantage that will reduce costs for companies to develop on multiple systems. It really is a great thing,

      I thought it was going to be called xbox 360 or something like that. They were saying that they dont want xbox2 to sound less then ps3? Just a thought.

      just incase you found it odd that its not easy to find without carefully looking through the page

      for some reason I only see links to transcripts etc.. Boring! They should have offered videos of all the GDC keynotes panels and lectures online.

    6. Good question WRT name, I don’t think it’s actually called Xbox 2, but saying "next generation Xbox" is a little too long for my taste 🙂

      It sounds like they’ll be a lot more to talk about at E3 in May.

      One thing I’m a little afraid of is the whole ‘playing online with people on the pc as well’ thing. PC users obviously have an advantage in some genres, like First Person Shooters, which wont be fun to xbox2 players. Sure, you can get that mouse/keyboard adapter plug for your xbox, but it doesn’t offer ture mouse mechanics. When you point the mouse up, your cursor moves up the same way it would as if you are using a controller.

      PC users in games like Halo3 and etc. will be whooping xbox2 players in every which way, thus resulting in a turnoff for xbox players.
