Data Loader Service: Preview Feature for Microsoft Dynamics CRM Online (Part 1 of 2)


Customers are facing challenges with data migration scenario, where each customer/partner has to write custom code or use 3rd party tools to import large volume of data. To help alleviate this pain point, Microsoft Dynamics team has developed a cloud Data Loader service for Dynamics CRM Online. The key benefit of this service is the ability to move your data between flat files and CRM Online, and cut down on implementation costs. We’re pleased to announce preview of this service that will empower organizations to better manage their data import/export processes. The preview supports only import operation, and the export will come in the next update of the feature.

This new Data Loader is available as a preview to North American based Dynamics CRM Online organizations. It supports CRM 2015 Online Update1 and the upcoming release. 

Important

Microsoft doesn't provide support for this preview feature. A preview feature is a feature that is not complete, but is made available before it’s officially in a release so customers can get early access and provide feedback. Microsoft Dynamics CRM Technical support won’t be able to help you with issues or questions. Preview features aren't meant for production use and are subject to a separate supplemental terms of use for preview features

Getting started 

The Data Loader preview is enabled by default for all CRM administrators. Use the following steps to access the service:

  1. Navigate to link https://lcs.dynamics.com/DataLoader/Index.
  2. Click on Sign in and enter your CRM administrator credentials.

NOTE: This CRM admin also needs to be a Service or Global admin in AAD (Azure active directory).

This will log you in the service, and you are ready to use.

Preview limitations

  • Only supported for North America geography
  • No support for email attachments
  • No Web API support for accessing the tool
  • Limited to flats files as source data format
  • Scheduling Jobs not supported
  • Dynamics CRM On-Premises is not supported

  1. There are some improper messaging or might be not enough functionality to resolve some errors says:

    While uploading bunch of files, I get error message

    "The data project entity has a mapping that includes either the status or Associated status reason, but not both. Update the target mapping

    to include both properties if state is to be imported"

    Since I had few files all together, this message confuse me regarding which file is having problem. I would like to have this message include name of file as well …if possible And also allow some additional feature to resolve this sort of issue to add new field like status, and allow some available optionset values directly rather than from files.

    I would like to see some estimated time during upload process with some more detail. I did uploaded few files and it complete Souce and staging stage, but it is not moving to "Import To CRM" stage since yesterday…so user get confused to verify in minutes, hours, days….

    I would like to see some status on Queue where it is waiting and how many ahead of it and estimated time and so on,….. same like when you call customer service, some time they tell you how many calls are ahead of you and estimated times…..

    I did uploaded some files but still waiting for data to be uploaded since yesterday. I would like to see some mroe estimated time to wait, or number of queue ahead of me, or time in terms of Minute, Hour, Days, Weeks or notify when the job compeltes. Some time when we call customer service, they indicate, how many calls are ahead of us and what is the estimated waiting time or call me back.. I would like to advance these feature if possible……

    Issue #1- about error message about where all required status fields are not mapped" – we do have a bug filed and will be fixing soon. Regarding the optionsets value, would like to understand more what you would like to see here. We have some backlog features for static value substitution.

    Issue #2: "An error occurred. Please contact.." This can happen when the uploaded file has some errors. We already have fixed this and will be refreshing the binaries tonight (Wednesday end of day). So if you try it tomorrow you should not see this error again but rather detail error text on what exact error was encountered. So you can go fix it.

    Issue #3: Files not moving from staging to Target. I am not sure what could be going on there. Would like to work with you to understand the repro and details better.

    I would encourage you to use the in app feedback mechanism (Smiley feature), since via that you could share your email address so we can reach out to you for details.
