SQL Server 2005 SP4, KBA 2463332, Installation Issues

Problem Description:

This is regarding the SQL Server 2005, SP4 Installation. This is in reference to: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2463332

There had been a lot of issues being reported on MSDN Forums, about the installation failures.

About the patch:

Refer: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2463332, to get the information about the bugs that are fixed in Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 4 (SP4).

Service packs are cumulative. Each new service pack contains all the fixes that are in previous service packs, together with any new fixes. You do not have to install a previous service pack before you install the latest one. For example, you do not have to install Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 1 (SP1) before you install Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 (SP2).

This update is available via Microsoft Updates.

Troubleshooting details:

  • Open the setup log files from the location: For example, C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\Hotfix\SQL9Express_Hotfix_KB2463332*.txt

For more information, see http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143702(SQL.90).aspx

  • Try to download the SP4 from the locations mentioned above, and launch it manually. If you are on Windows Vista/Windows Server 2008 or later editions, please make sure you run the setup as “An administrator”.

The Setup.exe that you downloaded from: To obtain SQL Server 2005 SP4, visit the following Microsoft Web site: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=204632 (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=204632)

To obtain SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP4, visit the following Microsoft Web site: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=204633 (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=204633)

Run the EXE, “As an administrator”, to launch the SP4 Setup.

  • Sometimes, the patch is installed, but still the Microsoft Updates would keep on prompting for this update, and if you are sure that you have installed the SP4 for your instance, you can hide this updates in the Windows Update so that it will not offer it to you continuously. For more information, please refer to the below KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902992.

Before you hide this update, please go to Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs, and click “Show All Updates”, and make sure that this update is successfully installed.

Refer: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/952032, to ignore/hide any Microsoft Update.

  • You can try the suggestions from: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en/sqlsetupandupgrade/thread/cd722844-bd93-4e57-9342-aeee7514ca43, which says: Please try the following steps to delete the SP4 update from Windows Updates and then install SP4 manually:
    • 1. Go to Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services
    • 2. Stop the service "Automatic Updates"
    • 3. Click Start -> Run and type the following %windir%\SoftwareDistribution
    • 4. Open the “Download” folder and delete all contents of that folder
    • 5. Start the service "Automatic Updates"
  • Once you have patched the SP4, the build number is supposed to be 9.00.5000. The other later builds are:

Build number

  • There were a couple of scenarios where disabling Folder compression helped. Identify if there is any Folder compression. If there is, please go ahead and remove the same. For this:
    • o Go to the properties of your C driver.
    • o Click the General tab, you will see an option “Compress this drive to save disk space”, if this is checked, go ahead and uncheck this.

Go ahead and check these settings for the SQL Server installation, and data folders.

    • Go to the properties of the folder you are checking
    • On the General tab, click Advanced button.
    • Uncheck the following options: “Compress contents to save disk space”, and “Encrypt contents to secure data”

I do not want to add

    SQL Server, Setup, 2463332, kb2463332, SP4

to my system. All I want to do is delete it forever! How do I do this???    Frank

  2. It is always recommended to patch your SQL Server instance with the latest available updates (Service Packs, Cumulative Updates, Security Patches). Please refer support.microsoft.com/…/2463332 (List of the issues that are fixed in SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 4)

To know more about uninstalling SP4, see

    Hope this helps..

  3. Chaitanya,

    Thank you for the article.

    I have the following situation:

    •  SQL Server Express 2005 SP 4 Update (KB2463332) fails to install via Automatic Updates
    • Manual install completed successfully, however  KB2463332 does not show under Add or Remove Programs

    • when I run “select @@version;”  against databases, I get version “9.00.5000.00” which  should be SQL Server 2005 SP4

    • Same version (9.00.5000.00) shows up under all SQL Components when I look at Support Information in Add or Remove Programs.

    • Automatic Updates on the server insists KB2463332 is yet to be installed

    • The server (2003 R2 Standard) reports to WSUS that above mentioned update failed to install. We have to maintain clean WSUS reports for compliance reasons. This is really the problem at the moment.

Any ideas as to what I can I do to make this server "realize" SP4 is already applied? My concern is that if I hide this update, it will still be reported to WSUS as failed or not installed

    Thank you very much!

    Alik

Why does the installer hang at the Feature Selection window? I hit next and nothing more happens. It just … hangs

  5. Craig says:

I am currently trying to update the client tools only for SSIS development and SQL Server Management  Studio to SP3 or SP4 from stock 9.00.1399.00.  However it continually fails every time when I try to install, with the following error message :- "Unable to install Windows Installer MSI file"

    under section "Setup Support Files"

And in the Hotfix support log it states :-

"This installation is forbidden by system policy.  Contact your system administrator.

    C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90Setup BootstrapCacheSQLSupportx861033SqlSupport.msi"

I have admin rights so it's not an authorisation issue.  How do I proceed?

  6. @Craig : Its always recommended to update all the SQL Server components at the same time. For the above error refer: msdn.microsoft.com/…/aa368542(VS.85).aspx, for error codes.

    Also check this: social.msdn.microsoft.com/…/71c18daf-c0cb-4d78-86e5-a30da38c5224

Can you please give additional error details along with error codes..

    Hey Chaitanya,

Want to just know that even if the Db server is Sql server 2008, can we install Sql Server 2005 sp4 not it. I am not sure of this process, as i got mail from my systems guys regarding this. Thought to shoot out this question to you.

    Thanks In Advance,

    Chaitanya

  8. @Krishna Chaitanya : You can have SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2005 simultaneously on the same machine. Check this: msdn.microsoft.com/…/ms143694(v=sql.100).aspx

There are some questions on forums around this, like : social.msdn.microsoft.com/…/d299e7bf-f680-465b-b0bd-d91290910d6a

  9. Josep says:

Hi, I need to install SQL Server 2005 Standard on Windows 8.1, I have installed SQL Server 2005 Express Edition (9.0.5000) without problems, but when I try to install SQL Server 2005 Standard (9.0.1399) from DVD the installation program crash when try start service with this error:

    Property(S): SQLBROWSERACCOUNT = NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM

MSI (s) (A4:A4) [17:51:43:907]: Producto: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 – la actualización "Hotfix 3024 for SQL Server Database Services 2005 ENU (KB000000)" no se pudo instalar.

I think that the problem is version 9.0.1399, exists any way to install downloading before the 9.0.5000 files from Microsoft site?

    Thanks.
