R2 Installation – Firewall Error Message

Well, I started my evaluation yesterday on SQL Server 2008 R2. The install went pretty smoothly on my Virtual Machine, with one minor irritation. I thoughtI would post it here in case you run into it.

As I started the process, the Installation Validation step found one issue. When I clicked on that, I got the following error message:

That’s great, since I now know there was an issue, but there are two problems here. The first is that there is a link here that I can’t click on. C’mon, guys, we can do better than that. Even worse, I can’t select the text in the box to copy and paste it into my browser. Double-plus ungood.

Anyway, once I memorized the link and typed it in, I found out it was the Firewall settings. I had to enable ports 1433 and 1434 (my choice for both of those – only enable the ones you want) to allow the Instance and the Browser through. I could have waited until the end – the Installation doesn’t really need the firewall to be open – but I stopped and took care of this right away. After that, the install progressed just fine and I’m now working through my process for evaluation.

Stay Tuned!
