Windows Server AppFabric 1.1

I’ve created a few posts on Windows Server AppFabric as well as Windows Server AppFabric Logging as it provides fantastic functionality if your organization wants full control over the environment and is not ready to move “to the Cloud.” Of course there are hybrid scenarios but the former is best for a number of reasons (e.g. extremely sensitive PII [personal and identifiable information], governmental agency requirements/restrictions, etc.).

That said, Microsoft has released AppFabric 1.1 for Windows Server which is an update of Windows Server AppFabric 1.0. The following AppFabric Caching features have been added in this release:

  • Read-Through/Write-Behind
  • Graceful Shutdown
  • Domain Accounts
  • New ASP.NET Session State and Output Caching Provider
  • Compression
  • Multiple Cache Client Application Configuration Sections

Since I mentioned hybrid scenarios the patterns and practices (p&p) team has released a guide detailing how to build hybrid applications in the Cloud.

This guide focuses on the common issues encountered when building applications that run partly in the cloud and partly on-premises, or when migrating some or all elements of an existing on-premises application to the cloud. It focuses on using Windows Azure as the host environment, and shows how to take advantage of the many features of this platform, together with SQL Azure, to simplify and speed the development of these kinds of applications.
