Some common Acroplis questions

Wow – there has been some really good buzz on acropolis in the last 24 hours… Reading over the blogs and stuff two interesting questions are popping out:

Question: When are you shipping Acropolis!!
Answer: As soon as it is ready 😉 Seriously, we are very early in the cycle here, we came out at Teched to get some early feedback and find out if we are going in the right direction. Acropolis will NOT ship with Visual Studio 2008 and .NET Framework 3.5… Rather it will ship as an “option pack” style release that works super well with your Visual Studio 2008. Later we fully expect to fold in Acropolis into the next major release of Visual Studio and the .NET Framework.

Question: Does Acropolis support WinForms
Answer: Yes. While the UI aspects of acropolis (the themes, shell and transitions) are all built using WPF the base component model is UI tier agnostic. We believe it will be common to have “Parts” with “Views” in WinForms for example… Check out the RSSEagle example for more details on this. Further, it is certainly possible to build a full shell in WinForms…. If anyone is interested in working on a WinForms shell for acropolis let me know, we’d be happy to help!

  1. Thanks to everyone that took a look! I’m very excited about the buzz that’s going on.

  2. Paul says:

Can you compare and contrast to CAB and SCSF?  Is this CAB for WPF?  Is the SCSF going to be sunsetted when Acropolis hits the streets?

Are the underpinnings of Acropolis still using Object Builder and DI, or is there another metaphor being used?

(Good work by the way, I am looking forward to diving into this )

  3. Alvin says:

This looks like a great set of components/tools. I’ve got it installed and can’t wait to dive in.

Is this really slated to become part of the .NET Framework post-3.5? It would be nice to eliminate the need for additional redistributable bits.

  4. BradA says:

Paul — check out this post in the forums… http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1690657&SiteID=1

Alvin – Yes, this will be part of a future version of the .NET Framework post 3.5…

  5. Paul says:

Thanks Brad, I will monitor that thread.

Acropolis, as was/is CAB, is a good thing IMO.  ALL of the WPF books out so far deal with the nuts and bolts of WPF and such.

What hasnt been as visible is "How do you build a non trivial desktop app with WPF and the other new capabilities of .Net 3.0+".  What has changed in how to approach the problem.   Do we use the same old ways, or has the technology changed enough to cause/enable us to look at the problem in a new light.

The capabilities of WPF are enormous, and as such, force a rethink of how to design a non-trivial app.

    Again, thanks.
