Subscriptions to Report Builder reports

Many people are interested in creating subscriptions to Report Builder reports. In SQL Server 2005 this is only possible if the reports can be run unattended by the server. If the report has any user-dependent behavior, then it can only be run live by a user. Unfortunately, enabling model item security on a report model causes all reports against that model to potentially have user-dependent behavior. Therefore, as of this writing you cannot create subscriptions against a model-based report when the model has model item security enabled. We expect to fix this in a future release (how soon has not been decided yet).

I have just incorporated model item security on our main report model as the number of users has grown to a point where some level of security is necessary. I tested it a fair bit in Dev before adding it to Prod but have now discovered the issue mentioned above: "Subscriptions cannot be created because the credentials used to run the report are not stored, or if a linked report, the link is no longer valid."

This is a serious problem for me now:

    1. If I don't have security, some departments will lose their Report Builder capability which is unacceptable.

    2. if I don't roll back to no model item security, subscribers will be missing out on reports which cannot be run during daytime hours, also unacceptable.

We are using SQL Server 2008R2 64bit. I am testing upgrading to 2014. Any workarounds given that RB is not being developed further?
