Microsoft PDC10 アップデート(1) : Windows Azure VM Role

10/28-29(米国時間) マイクロソフト本社にて開催された Microsoft PDC10 にて Windows Azure Platform や Windows Phone 7、Internet Explorer 9などの最新情報が公開されました。その中でWindows Azure Platform に関する最新情報をご紹介していきます。

その中でも一番大きなニュースは Windows Azure Virtual Machine Role (VM ロール) です。Windows Azure の VM イメージ上で管理者権限を持つロールで、Windows Server 2008 R2 上で稼働するアプリケーションを Windows Azure でそのまま稼働させることができるようになります。VM ロールは 2010 年中にβ版の提供開始を予定しています。また、Windows Azure に VM ロールが稼働する VM 環境を直接構築できる機能も提供されます。こちらは 2011 年に提供開始予定です。

オンプレミスのアプリケーションをクラウドに移行する新機能として、VM ロールと合わせてアナウンスされたのは Server Application Virtualization、既存のアプリケーションを Windows Azure で稼働するWorker ロールベースのアプリケーションイメージにデプロイする機能です。この機能を用いれば既存のアプリケーションを容易に Windows Azure に移植することが可能になります。

また、過去バージョンを含む Windows Server をサポートする Guest OS が提供されます。VM ロールにより Windows Azure 上で Windows Server 2008 R2 をサポートします。また、2011年にはWindows Server 2008 SP2および Windows Server 2003のサポートも追加されます。
