adCenter API Campaign-Level Targeting – "Waterfall Targeting"


As part of our last release of adCenter, we introduced an ability to target at the campaign level. Our new campaign-level targeting feature allows you to set geographical location, age and gender, day of week, and time of day targeting options and incremental bids at the campaign level and refine your targeting settings at the ad group level. Ability to refine targeting settings is also referred as "waterfall targeting."

 Scenario: Campaign has targeting, Adgroup underneath does not have targeting: (Reuse Campaign level targeting)

Your campaign has targeting (for example, city of Seattle, and country of UK). If your adgroup under campaigns does not have any targeting, effective targeting for that adgroup is the same as one set for the campaign above it (Geo Targeting of city Seattle, and Country UK).

 Scenario: Campaign has targeting, Adgroup underneath needs to not have any targeting: (Adgroup overrides)

Your campaign has targeting (gender is male with incremental bid boost of 20%) and your adgroup under campaigns needs to not have any targeting (display to all). This can be accomplished by setting the target at adgroup level. That target should have each of its properties set to NULL. For example all of the target properties like Age, Behavior, and so forth should be set to NULL.

 Scenario: Campaign does not have any targeting, Adgroups underneath have targeting: (Adgroup overrides)

Your campaign has no targeting, but your adgroup under campaigns has targeting set for age/gender targeting. Effective targeting for that adgroup is the same as the targeting associated for that adgroup (in this case age/gender targeting).

Scenario: Both Campaign and adgroup have targeting: (Adgroup overrides)

Your campaign has targeting (for example, gender is male with incremental bid boost of 20%) and your adgroup under campaigns has targeting set with gender targeting as female with incremental bid boost of 10%. Effective targeting for that adgroup is the same as the targeting associated for that adgroup (in this case, gender targeting of female with bid boost of 10%).

Your campaign has targeting (gender is male with an incremental bid boost of 20%, and geo targeting for say Seattle) and your adgroup under campaigns has targeting set for gender targeting as female with incremental bid boost of 10%. Effective targeting for that adgroup is the same as the targeting associated for that adgroup (in this case gender targeting of female with a bid boost of 10%).
