Jan’s MVA Course Pick-of-the-Week #mvapotw

Every week we ask one of our local Technical Evangelists to recommend a specific Microsoft Virtual Academy course and to explain why it’s a great choice so you don’t have to sift through the long list of available courses. If you don’t know Microsoft Virtual Academy, its mission is to help developers, knowledgeable IT professionals and advanced students learn the latest technology, build their skills, and advance their careers, all for free. This week Jan Tielens explains his pick-of-the-week

The course: Embrace Open Source Technologies to Accelerate and Scale Solutions

Instructor: Rick Claus, Madhan Arumugam Ramakrishnan, Kundana Palagiri, Kundana Palagiri, Ahmet Alp Balkan, Sung Hsueh

 The Contents

  • How to deploy Linux and OSS on Azure
  • Leverage Existing Chef/Puppet Toolsets for Management
  • How to Implement Containerization with Docker to Increase Density and Performance of Virtual Machines
  • Creating Large-Scale Linux Deployments on Azure

Why Jan likes this course

“Some years ago people wouldn’t associate Microsoft with open source technologies like Linux. But times are changing and Microsoft has really opened up and is even open-sourcing for example the .NET Framework. Another great example of an open Microsoft platform is Azure: on Azure we’d happily host your Windows virtual machines, but also your Linux machines with IaaS. In this course, you’ll learn how use the Azure CLI on Linux, the Linux Agent, the Linux Integration Services and so on. Then you’ll learn how you can take your existing Chef/Puppet instructions and configurations and configure agents on your IaaS instances to point to your servers for deployment. Finally we’ll explain how Docker and other containerization technologies can increase density and performance for your solutions.”
