Department of Justice Issues a FedRAMP High ATO for Azure Government
The Department of Justice (DOJ) Justice Management Division (JMD) has issued two FedRAMP High ATOs for Azure Government. The DOJ performs critical services for U.S. Citizens with the mission “[t]o enforce the law and defend the interests of the United States according to the law; to ensure public safety against threats foreign and domestic; to provide federal leadership in preventing and controlling crime; to seek just punishment for those guilty of unlawful behavior; and to ensure fair and impartial administration of justice for all Americans.”
JMD is the principal organizational unit responsible for management and administrative support in the Department of Justice. Much of the work of this Division is internal facing and works to make sure that the infrastructure is in place so that all other components of the Department can complete the more visible Departmental work. Under the direction of the Assistant Attorney General for Administration (AAG/A), JMD provides Department-wide policy guidance to the Department’s offices, boards, divisions and, to a limited extent, its bureaus. The Division has four key areas of responsibility:
- Fiscal responsibility
- Human resources management
- Information resources and management
- Policy, management and planning
The authorizations will allow DOJ to take advantage of cloud-based core networking and application hosting environments to standardize cloud implementations for application owners within the organization. Having consistent implementations for individual mission owners within DOJ will streamline cloud adoption practices and security authorizations for future DOJ systems moving to Azure Government cloud.
By issuing the Azure Government ATO, DOJ can also take advantage of the cloud benefits provided by IaaS and PaaS capabilities. Azure Site Recovery (ASR) allows streamlined migration options for customers migrating from on-premises datacenters to Azure Government. ASR automates the replication of virtual machines for disaster recovery scenarios, cloud migration, and replication for hybrid environments.
In addition to an Agency FedRAMP High ATO from DOJ, Microsoft Azure Government has also received a FedRAMP High P-ATO from the Joint Authorization Board (JAB).
