Azure Content Spotlight – General Data Protection Regulation

Welcome to another Azure Content Spotlight! These articles are used to highlight items in Azure that could be more visible to the Azure community.

In May 2018, a European privacy law, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), goes into effect and sets a new bar for privacy rights, security, and compliance in the European Union (EU). GDPR gives individuals greater control over their personal data and imposes many new obligations on organizations that collect, handle, or analyze personal data.

Organizations must ensure data usage transparency and use security and controls to protect it. The GDPR also gives national regulators new powers to impose significant fines on organizations (up to 4% of a company's global revenues or €20 million, whichever is greater) that breach the law.

Microsoft offers a lot of tools and information to help organizations and individuals to prepare for this new era of privacy regulation. For more information on what Microsoft has to offer, refer to the Microsoft Trust Center.
