Updated warning – .NET Framework 3.0 cleanup tool removes MSDN and SQL Express

Yesterday, I posted a warning that the .NET Framework 3.0 pre-release version uninstall tool will remove the final release of SQL Server 2005 Express Edition.  A customer posted a comment on that blog post indicating that they ran the uninstall tool and it also removed the final release of MSDN for Visual Studio 2005.

I looked at the MSDN MSI and the data files for the uninstall tool, and I can confirm that the .NET Framework 3.0 pre-release version uninstall tool will also remove the final release of MSDN for VS 2005.  It will not remove the version of MSDN that is installed as part of the Visual Studio 2005 Express Editions though.

So in summary, if you run the .NET Framework 3.0 uninstall tool on your system, it will remove the final release of both SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and MSDN for Visual Studio 2005, and you will have to reinstall both of these products on your system after running the uninstall tool.

The unfortunate thing is the cleanup tool is referenced several important places and there are no warnings about these issues anywhere. I got bit by this when I upgraded from an earlier CTP to the RC1 version(s).

I think you (or the appropriate people) should make an effort into updating all the install locations (.NET 3.0 Runtime, SDK, VS 2005 Extensions, etc.) with better information about how to uninstall previous releases, particularly the SDK bits since they must be uninstalled in several "pieces".

Here are some places where I found references to the uninstall tool:

    1. http://msdn.microsoft.com/windowsvista/support/relnotes/netfx3/default.aspx

    2. http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=880553&SiteID=1

    3. http://www.netfx3.com/blogs/news_and_announcements/archive/2006/11/06/.NET-Framework-3.0-has-been-released_2100_.aspx

Please take this as constructive "criticism"!
