Mailbag: How to install Microsoft Report Viewer 2005 in silent mode

I have seen some of your other posts regarding how to install various parts of Visual Studio 2005 and the .NET Framework 2.0 in silent mode.  I would also like to install the Microsoft Report Viewer 2005 redistributable package in silent mode.  How can I accomplish that?

The Microsoft Report Viewer 2005 redistributable package uses the same external setup UI handler that the .NET Framework 2.0 does.  That means that all of the .NET Framework 2.0 setup command line parameters apply to the Report Viewer setup package as well.

To install the Report Viewer package in silent mode, you can use a command line like the following (and you can update it with other parameters based on the list in my previous blog post as needed for your scenarios):

ReportViewer.exe /q:a /c:"install.exe /q"

Thanks Aaron.  I took my original question one step further, since we need to install the ReportViewer language packs in a silent fashion.  I used the same install command line arguments and they worked the same way with the two language packs I tried (French and Spanish).  Here are the silent install command lines:

    dotnetfx.exe /q:a /c:"install.exe /q"

    ReportViewer.exe /q:a /c:"install.exe /q"

    ReportViewerLP.exe /q:a /c:"install.exe /q"

("ReportViewerLP.exe" is the name of any language pack you download, so for multiples you can rename the EXE and the command line will still work with it.)

I’ll also add that you can silently uninstall the .NET Framework 2.0, ReportViewer, and ReportViewer Language Packs with these command lines:

    "C:WINDOWSMicrosoft.NETFrameworkv2.0.50727Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0install.exe" /qu

    "C:WINDOWSMicrosoft.NETFrameworkv2.0.50727Microsoft Report Viewer Redistributable 2005install.exe" /qu

    "C:WINDOWSMicrosoft.NETFrameworkv2.0.50727Microsoft Report Viewer Redistributable 2005 Language Pack – FRAinstall.exe" /qu

    "C:WINDOWSMicrosoft.NETFrameworkv2.0.50727Microsoft Report Viewer Redistributable 2005 Language Pack – ESNinstall.exe" /qu

    Thanks for your help, Aaron.

Would you happen to know how to install Report View 2010 silently?

The old command ReportViewer.exe /q:a /c:"install.exe /q" doesn't seem to work as it pops up the GUI

  3. Hi Bill – When in doubt, I usually try to run the setup package with the /? command line switch to see if it has any documentation.  This works for the version of ReportViewer.exe at…/details.aspx (which I think is the one you're referring to here).  It looks like you should be able to install it silently by running this:

    ReportViewer.exe /q /norestart

Can you give that a try and see if it works in your scenario?

I can confirm it worked in my install scenario – thanks Aaron.
