Repair tool available to help fix some Update Rollup 2 for Media Center 2005 issues

I would like to call your attention to an alpha version of a tool that Peter Rosser wrote that will automatically repair and re-register parts of Media Center to fix some of the issues we've seen so far with Update Rollup 2 for MCE 2005.  You can read about the exact steps the tool does and where to get the tool in this blog post.

Please note that this tool is not "officially" supported, but it has proven useful in some scenarios already.  Also, we will be making every effort to add additional steps to it as we discover workarounds for additional issues caused by Update Rollup 2.  Also, as Peter states in his blog post, if the tool does not work for you, please contact us and let us know.  I've posted a list of log files that would be useful to us from Update Rollup 2.  Please send them to us with a description of the problem you're seeing.  My email is, and you can contact Peter here.

I was wondering if you could help – I have a MCE 2005 PC and for reasons unknown I get a Stutter on Live TV. I have tried just about every thing I know to try and solve it.

I have been told this it is a compatibility issue with a Dual Core Processor and I should run the following fix….Is this correct?

Thank you in advance James Ryan

PS Yes I am running rollup 2.

“You need the program imagecfg.exe from Microsoft. Place it in the c:windowsehome directory.

Reboot into Windows safe mode (hold down F8 after POST and select Safe Mode) and the two programs you modify is ehrec.exe and ehrecvr.exe. Make a backup copy of them.

run the following commands from c:windowsehome

    imagecfg -a 0x1 ehrec.exe

    imagecfg -a 0x1 ehrecvr.exe

You will get messages on the screen speaking of processor affanity. This particular commands sticks the processes onto core 1. If you use 0x2, you will place them onto core 2. Reboot and you are done. “

  3. Hi Sevennhvn – I don't know for sure what could cause this type of problem or what to suggest to fix this.  I'd suggest posting a question on one of the following forums and hopefully somebody there will be able to provide some ideas for you to try in this scenario:…/reader.mspx…/ShowForum.aspx
