Visual Studio 2005 beta will not install on Windows Server 2003 Small Business Server

I am not sure how many people out there are running Windows Server 2003 Small Business Server and trying to install and use Visual Studio 2005 beta 2, but I wanted to let you know about this issue just in case.  There is a bug in setup for Visual Studio 2005 beta 2 (and also in beta 1 and any CTPs that shipped in the meantime) that prevents VS from installing correctly on Windows Server 2003 Small Business Server.  If you try to run setup, it will initialize the setup UI and then inform you that "A failed installation has been detected. Press OK to uninstall the product. Then retry installing."

Pressing OK and allowing setup to try to clean-up the failed installation will not allow install to succeed.  This bug has been fixed in later builds and will install correctly on this OS when it ships.

In the meantime, you can workaround this issue by doing the following:

  1. Launch regedit.exe

  2. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft Integration

  3. Rename the entire Microsoft Integration sub-key

  4. Close regedit.exe and re-run Visual Studio 2005 setup

  1. Thanks Aaron, i’m running SBS 2k3 on ‘Jeeves’ at home to host all kinds of crap for me and Michelle. But like you, I don’t know how many people would actually have a need to install VS on SBS unless they’re debugging something.

Except maybe folks like us because it’s a different test scenario <grin>

I am a Small Business user and provide support to small businesses and anything I develop needs to be able to run on SBS. This fix worked for me! Thank you.

    Thank you very much

This error occurs on WS 2003 standard too. What exactly do I rename? Does it matter what its renamed to?

    Thanks

  5. Justin says:

Nevermind I got it. Just to clarify I renamed "Microsoft Integration" to "Microsoft Integration2" and it worked fine.

    Thanks Aaron

Thanks a bunch, this fix works for the installation of the Beta 2 Team Foundation Server too. Tried to install it on a Small Business server and got maintenance mode and the request to uninstall everytime. After changing the registry key it worked.

    So thanks to Aaron

how will i install it on Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Edition. I cant find "Microsoft Integration" anywhere

  8. Hi Mazhar – This particular bug only affected Small Business Server.  You should not have any problem installing the .NET Framework 2.0 on any other editions of Windows Server 2003.  Please go ahead and try it out and let me know if you run into any problems.
