Request for help – XP Embedded web download tool and proxy servers

Hey all, last night the final build of XP Embedded SP2 was posted for download.  I received a comment in response to my blog post regarding problems using the web download tool on a network behind a firewall and with a proxy server.  I have tried to reproduce the issue internally behind the Microsoft firewall and haven't had any luck yet.  I asked some of my colleagues who are working on the web download tool for the Visual Studio 2005 express editions for advice and as a result have added some code specifically designed to fix proxy server authentication issues that are sometimes seen when using BITS.  However, since I haven't been able to reproduce the problem, I cannot verify whether or not this code I added fixes the problem or not.  So, I have a small request for you - if you have tried to use the XP Embedded web download tool (xpeffi.exe) and have had any download errors related to proxy servers or firewalls, could you please contact me via a comment in my blog or by emailing me directly at aaronste (at) microsoft (dot) com?  I will provide you with a private build of the download tool to see if my code change will fix this issue or not.  If it does work, we can refresh the web download tool when the remaining XPE SP2 MUI language packs are ready to release in the near future.  Thank you in advance!

I was unable to download VS 2005 software until they finally posted a full version downloadable via normal http/ftp methods.

Please get rid of the custom download tools if you want us to be able to use your software!

I’ve been jerking around for over a week trying to download – no success.

I’m running fully up-to-date XP Pro SP2, have turned off ALL protection and spent hours have pfarting around with IE settings etc – but to no avail.

I’m staggered that a mob with Microsoft’s resources appears unable to implement a simple download process. God help those of us with stalled projects waiting for the eXP act to come together

  3. Hi Neil, I’m very sorry for this hassle. I am working with my team to publish a reference page with the direct links for all of the packages that XPEFFI is designed to download for cases like yours where the download does not work via BITS. It should be available tomorrow I hope. In the meantime, here is the link to the SP2 package – http://download.microsoft.com/download/9/1/c/91c0118b-c683-47c4-9e84-9b4d60172be3/WINDOWS_XP_EMBEDDED_SP2E.EXE
