Cool list of MSI setup tricks

While searching for orca.msi earlier today to try to determine whether or not it is available outside of the Platform SDK, I stumbled upon a really cool list of MSI tips, tricks and tools.  There is one tool in there that rates the complexity of an MSI, I'm going to have to run that against the Visual Studio MSI when I have some time tomorrow, I'm really curious to know what that will come back as.  I would think it has to be more complex than the Office setup package  🙂

As a side note - I've gotten a couple of mails from internal folks about posting orca.msi and I'm not quite sure if it is intended to be posted outside of the Platform SDK so I may have to take it down.  I can't think of a reason why we wouldn't make such a critical MSI debugging tool harder to obtain than it needs to be so hopefully I can convince the right people that we should be making it available for direct download.  But we'll see.....

You should be able to select ‘Windows Installer SDK’ only from the Platform SDK Update site,

It’s still an 8MB download, though. Windows Installer SDK 1.0 and 1.1 were available as separate redistributable downloads.

The problem is the Platform SDK website lists the Core SDK as a prerequisite for the Windows Installer SDK, so I’m not sure you can install only the Windows Installer piece. I’m going to try to dig into that and figure out if it is possible when I have some time later today….

If you have trouble with the Microsoft Web Installer for the Platform SDK, use the Full install options. If you don’t want to download all of the CAB files, I was able to download just enough to install the MSI portion and grab the orca.msi. I suppose you can extract the cab files in install further to get just orca.msi, but I did not determine which cab file contains the orca.msi. I had extracted cab file 1-6, then 14, 15, and 16. I think you only need 1 and 15. You need extract.exe as well. If you don’t have it, it is in the PSDK-FULL.exe file.

I don’t know if it can be installed, but can be downloaded separately from here:
