Windows Azure Geo-Location Goes Live

clip_image002

With the Windows Azure CTP you can now specific location where you would like your app to run – think of this as choosing which data center you’re placing your app in. Right now, there are three locations (“USA – Anywhere,” “USA – Northwest,” and “USA – Southwest”). It is “a bit” US centric for the moment, understood, but it proves the point.

Using our new geo-location functionality, you can now specify an affinity between different hosted services and storage accounts. The idea is a smart one on a number of fronts

  1. Performance – put your apps closer to your users and your app closer to the data it uses
  2. Policy – it may make sense to have your data in certain locations to meet legal requirement
