The end of the desktop is near?

SaaS is without discussion a very important trend in the ICT industry.  A perception that often is associated to SaaS (fed by a number of bloggers, analysts, reporters, company executives) is that this implies a browser-only interface and hence the days of the desktop are numbered.

The vision that MS has in this area is labeled "Software + Services" (AKA S+S) - it embraces the SaaS model (because there is obviously demand and value for the customers in area) but it combines SaaS (AKA software in-the-cloud) with on-premise software (client and/or server software) in order to have best of both worlds.

According to a recent article in BusinessWeek, it seems that this vision is now being confirmed by more and more key players in the SaaS space like eBay, Google and Adobe who have released or are testing products that let Web developers build desktop versions of online services and sites.
