Application Insights – Advisory 11/12

Final Update: Friday, 17 November 2016 22:15 UTC

The planned updates are complete at this time.  Customers who use ARM templates to manage test configurations may need to update those templates to match the correct regions for their resources.

We understand that customers rely on Application Insights as a critical service and apologize for any impact this update may have caused.

Update: Wednesday, 16 November 2016 23:28 UTC

Part of the service updates being deployed bring greater transparency to the location of customer data.  This removes the incorrect option of Central US.

The cleanup against existing customer subscriptions is currently in progress.  Some customers may continue to see Central US as an option for provisioning Application Insights resources and will receive a failure when attempting to provision there.

Thank you for your patience.

  • Work Around:
    • Customers provisioning Application Insights resources who see Central US as an option should choose a different region.
    • Customers should update Azure Resource Manager (ARM) templates to remove references which use Central US.  Instead, customers should use East US or South Central US regions in ARM templates.
  • Next Update: Before 11/17 23:30 UTC

Test runs of the cleanup script have been successful today and we are proceeding with the cleanup against existing customer subscriptions.  Some customers may continue to see Central US as an option for provisioning Application Insights resources and will receive a failure when attempting to provision there.

Update: Tuesday, 15 November 2016 01:05 UTC

Root cause has been isolated to a configuration issue during migration to a new service which caused provisioning in Central US to be disabled before the menu option was removed. To address this issue we have issued a hotfix that will prevent any confusion for new Application Insights customers.  We are also executing a migration and cleanup script that will update the provisioning experience for existing Application Insights customers attempting to create new Application Insights resources.

Some existing customers may still see Central US as an option for provisioning Application Insights resources, but this will still fail if selected.  The cleanup script effort for existing customers is expected to take several days due a very cautious rollout to prevent any additional impact.  We will update this post as the cleanup progresses.
  • Work Around: Customers provisioning Application Insights resources who see Central US as an option should choose a different region.

Between 11/09  and 11/14 7: 00 PM UTC some customers will experience failures in creating Application Insights components in the Central US region as we are working on updates to one of our back end services. The issue should be resolved by 11/14 ~9:00 PM UTC.
Workaround:  Customers should not create Application Insights components in Central US region till the issue is resolved.
We apologize for any inconvenience.
