I’m back and so is the Grand Rapids, MI .NET User Group……

Ok, so it’s been  A LONG time since I last posted and hopefully that will change now (I say that everytime I think I will have some free time and/or something interesting to post).

Well, I’m happy to say that the .NET User Group is firing back up after a 6-9 month hiatus. Basically, the folks in charge lost steam and there were a myriad of other problems. Well, a few interested parties (myself included) are doing our best to get things going again. We’ve registered the domain http://grdotnet.org and will be working to put content up over the next week or two.

We have an organizational meeting this Wednesday (28th) night at 7pm. The meeting will be at the local Analysts International office in Ada (just outside Grand Rapids). The address is…..

4670 East Fulton, Suite 103
Ada, MI 49301

Martin Shoemaker and I will be there ready to hash out the goals, direction, etc. of this group so come on over if you want to throw in your two cents. We are also looking for corporate sponsors so if you are local and think that your company might be interested then shoot me an email.

  1. Alex, I run http://www.AZDNUG.com and would be happy to share the successfull things I’ve done, and the unsuccessful, to help you guys.

  2. http://www.azdnug.com – 400 happy members 😉

We do a book exchange quarterly that helps people swap out there library.

We do a car pool for people to get into the city.

We started creating small sites for non-profit organizations, to help newbies get the hang of .net. It’s a ton easier to learn when you have a mentor, and a real world project to work on.

We don’t charge anyone anything. $5.00 buys your own pizza, that’s the only $$$ that changes hands, and it’s optional.

We have a Yahoo Group (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/AZDNUG/) for e-mail, that gets about 10 messages a day, that is a free for all on .net and it is really helping our community stay in touch.

We keep the website updated regularly (at least monthly)

We don’t let vendors advertise there product, unless it’s something that can be taken home and used immediately.

We do welcome component vendors and book vendors to help with give-a-ways. For give-a-ways we sell $2.00 tickets and put that money into a pull and use it to do something for our group, like a picnic, or support a christmas family.

We don’t run a dictator ship. Every member has the power to speak his mind, and if the group is for it, we do it. We commonly use the polling feature of our yahoo group to ask the members what they want to do.

I’m sure there is more, as we are in the end of our second year. Let me know if you think there is anything else we can do, or if there is anything else I can do to help you get your group started 😉
