Workaround for SQL Server 2012 setup deployment requiring access to Visual Studio media

In some situation during SQL server setup access to VS media is required, if the media is not there then SQL setup may be blocked, here is workaround for this situation

1-      Go to control panel programs and features select VS ultimate and then click Uninstall/Change.

2-Select Add or Remove Features then click download since media source is missing.

3-Select all VS ultimate features

4-Start download and install all features

5-Install Visual Studio 2010 SP1

6-Install SQL server 2012 and happily have the installation succeed

Installing SqlServer 2008 Express is not needed.

Except for the critical updates ( usually for security ), i download every Microsoft product in a special folder. Afterwards , i open this folder and i execute the setup.exe or the .msi file. So i have always the "media install ( especially for SQL Server Express and its service pack and my Visual Studio Express 2010 )

I have not this problem for my old VS Standard 2008 and SQL Server Developer 2008 as i bought the product and i kept with care the corresponding  DVDs

But your "tip" is useful and well-documented thanks your screenshot.

I hope you will go on on the same way ( i know you will need much work and time )

    So thanks…

  4. Thanks a lot Papy.. really appreciate you took time to read and comment.

    i have a problem installing the SSMS, i have VS2010 and VS2012 installed + VS2010 SP1

but it insists on installing the VS2010 shell, it gets most of the way through the install then reports it cannot access the framework file WindowsMicrosoft.NETassemblyGAC_32Microsoft.VisualStudio.Settingsv4.0_10.0.0.0__b03f5f7f11d50a3a,  this does exist, but it only has the options retry and cancel, i have reapplied SP1 and tried to install the shell on its own, but same result
