XBox 360 committed to HD-DVD

There were some recent rumors that XBox 360 has some plans to offer a Blu-Ray external drive. However, I just read that the XBox team announced that they are fully commited to HD-DVD and have absolutely no backup plans for Blu-Ray.

The question of whether Xbox 360 has the flexibility to adapt to consumers’ needs is a different issue entirely.  Xbox 360 is a future-proofed system – one that allows us to add features as consumers demand them – as evidenced by our offering of the HD-DVD drive as an accessory. Current reports indicating that we have a back-up plan, which includes Blu-Ray support are incorrect.  At this point, we’re fully committed to HD-DVD and have absolutely no plans to support other optical formats.”

I hope Blu-Ray wins. HD-DVD is the bean counter’s format that companies have chosen just to save money.

Seems like right now both formats offer similar capacity. It seems that HD-DVD may be slightly farther along in terms of actually being able to deliver drives than Blu-ray. In the end, I like HD-DVD because of the managmed copy options and (from what I understand) slightly less restrictive DRM. I still don’t like the fact you cannot output HD signals over component cables (with either format). In the end, I think what the studios back is what will be the winning format (which currently appears to be Blu-Ray). Overall, I predict the neither one will take off. DVD is good enough for Joe Consumer and they have put the nail in their coffin when they couldn’t agree on a single standard. Once again greed and politics killed a good thing. Look at DVD-Audio and SACD.
